Novartis vaccine Bexsero® sees high uptake in first large-scale public vaccination program to help protect against devastating meningitis B

Basel, July 29, 2014 Novartis has announced the initial results of a large-scale vaccination campaign with Bexsero® (Meningococcal Group B Vaccine [rDNA, component, adsorbed]) to help protect against meningitis B within the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region of Québec, Canada. This public program adds to the growing real-world experience of Bexsero, which is approved in 34 countries, including the European Union, Australia and Canada[3],[4],[5],[6].
This regional program is the first of its kind globally and has reached 81% of the campaign's target population within the first three months[2]. This encompasses more than 45,000 infants, young children and adolescents from 2 months to 20 years of age[2]. The high rate of uptake in this public vaccination program with Bexsero demonstrates the value placed on preventing meningitis B within communities that are afforded access.

Phase 2 COSMOS Study Results Published in The Lancet Demonstrate Efficacy and Safety of Janssen’s Once-Daily Simeprevir in All Oral 12-Week Combination with Sofosbuvir for Genotype 1 Chronic Hepatitis C | Johnson & Johnson

CORK, Ireland (July 28, 2014) -- Results from the Phase 2 COSMOS (Combination OSiMeprevir and sOfosbuvir in HCV genotype 1 infected patientS) clinical study were published July 28 in The Lancet, demonstrating that 92 percent of genotype 1 chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) adult patients treated with Janssen R&D Ireland’s (Janssen) simeprevir, an NS3/4A protease inhibitor, in combination with sofosbuvir, achieved sustained virologic response 12 weeks after the end of treatment (SVR12), including those patients with compensated cirrhosis and prior null response to treatment with pegylated interferon (PegIFN) and ribavirin (RBV).
According to findings from the study, the all-oral 12-week, interferon-free treatment regimen with simeprevir and sofosbuvir resulted in consistent SVR12 rates regardless of degree of fibrosis, and was an effective and well-tolerated therapeutic regimen in both treatment-naïve and prior null-responder patients.

USDA Blog » In Brazil, a Search for Fungi to Control Disease-Spreading Insects

This post is part of the Science Tuesday feature series on the USDA blog. Check back each week as we showcase stories and news from the USDA’s rich science and research portfolio.
If you want to find a fungus that controls disease-spreading insects, you might want to go somewhere known for its biodiversity. So it makes sense that USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS) microbiologist Richard Humber will be traveling to Brazil over the next three years to join Brazilian scientists in searching for fungi to control black flies, sand flies and the types of mosquitoes that spread malaria, dengue and yellow fever.

Boil water advisory issued for Edgerton - KSHB.com

EDGERTON, Kan. - The Kansas Department of Health and Environment issued a boil water advisory for the public water supply located in Edgerton.

The city water supply experienced a loss of pressure in the water system because of a system malfunction. When that happens, it is possible for contaminants to get into the water. Chlorine residuals may also drop to levels that are inadequate to protect against bacterial contamination.

CDC discovers botched shipment with bird flu, closes down labs | TheHill

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Friday said it has closed two laboratories and halted some shipments of dangerous disease samples after discovering new safety breaches, including one that involved the dangerous avian flu.
The CDC, which is already under fire for safety mishaps involving live anthrax, said samples that were sent in March to the Department of Agriculture for research were contaminated with the highly infections virus H5N1.

Vials Full of Smallpox Were Just Found In an Unapproved Lab

Well, this is disconcerting. According to an announcement today from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), vials of the smallpox virus were found in a lab in Maryland that was not only unapproved to be handling the live pathogens—it was unequipped.
Though we've eradicated smallpox, the disease is so wildly infectious that it qualifies as a bioterrorism threat, meaning we keep it around just in case we ever need a new vaccine. What's more, only two labs in the entire world are legally permitted to handle the stuff: The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Atlanta headquarters and the VECTOR Institute in Russia. In other words, not the NIH's Bethesda, Maryland campus.

This Breed of Mosquito Is Invading the U.S. — And It Could Carry a Terrifying Disease | TheBlaze.com

Chikungunya fever and the Asian tiger mosquito: two names you may not know, but which could soon threaten your health.
In Swahili, “chikungunya” it means “walking bent over,” referring to the fact that those who contract the disease often have trouble walking due to headaches, rashes, fevers and, most of all, paralyzing joint pain.
