Gilead’s Investigational GS-5806 Reduces Viral Load and Clinical Symptoms in Phase 2 Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) Challenge Study in Adults | Gilead
RSV is a pathogen that infects the human respiratory tract, potentially leading to bronchiolitis and pneumonia. While most otherwise healthy people recover from the virus, there is an increased risk of severe disease and death in premature infants, individuals with certain pulmonary diseases, the elderly and those who are immune suppressed. Globally, the clinical burden of RSV infection is comparable to that of influenza.

CDC reopens SARS playbook | TheHill
The Centers for Disease Control is using its playbook from the 2003 SARS virus scare to handle a new pandemic that has killed 173 people in the Middle East.
SARS, the severe acute respiratory syndrome, killed 774 people, but the new Middle Ease Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) is seen as even more dangerous because it has killed one in three people who have come into contact with it, compared to one in 10 for the 2003 virus.

Ugh - How Germs Spread in Offices and How to Stop Them in Their Tracks
Germs are expensive. Up to 40% of lost work time each year is due to the common cold per one estimate.
Offices are prime places for germs to spread — and it’s not just in the restrooms. Items we touch every day can have alarmingly high levels of bacteria and viruses. Then we carry those germs home to our families.

All in the Rotation « Berkeley Lab News Center
Viruses are the enigma of the biological world – despite having their own DNA and being able to adapt to their environment and evolve, they are not considered to be alive like cells. In order to reproduce and multiply – a requirement of “life” – a virus must invade a living cell, eject its DNA into that of the cell, and commandeer the cell’s biological machinery. While a virus, essentially, may be nothing more than a dollop of DNA packed into a protective coating of protein called a capsid, the packaging of that DNA is critical. The molecular motors that drive this DNA packaging process, however, have remained almost as enigmatic as the viruses themselves. A better understanding of these motors could be crucial to combating viral infections.

New insight on HIV life cycle gained through creative use of high-energy X-rays | Argonne National Laboratory
Argonne, Ill. – A key step in the decades-long mystery of the HIV life cycle was uncovered using what formerly was thought of as only a supplementary X-ray technique for structural biology. This advances study of HIV as well as highlights a powerful tool to obtain currently unobtainable high-resolution structural determination and characterization of RNA molecules.
Scientists discovered how the HIV virus recognizes its own messenger RNA amidst the more abundant collection of host cell RNA in order to pass on and replicate the genetic code for the virus. The structural basis for this export has been a mystery for more than 25 years. The use of small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) technique, a solution-based method that does not require protein crystallization and has minimal size limitations, succeed where traditional X-ray techniques have failed.

MERS outbreak becomes more urgent, WHO says - CNN.com
(CNN) -- The spread of the potentially fatal Middle East respiratory syndrome has become more serious and urgent, the World Health Organization said Wednesday.
At the same time, WHO said that -- for now, at least -- the illness known as MERS does not constitute a global health emergency
